Note

The World is turning in its own accord. You are forced to “recognize” patterns that may or may not be predetermined. These patterns, routines, cycles, and chance-meeting. Or are you able to appreciate that in fact, nothing is happening?

In TRANSIENCE, you are confronted with a couple of questions and emotions: a physical question that may or may not be directed to you; emotions arise from the acknowledgment of time passing; confusion about the patterns that may or may not have a meaning.

Concept

Transience is inspired by a traditional Japanese philosophy: mono no aware(物の哀れ) Translated as “the pathos of things passing,” it depicts the poignancy that arises when one encounters the transience of life.

The project explores the concept of repetition, pseudo-patterns, and relativity of time through intricate choreography. Traversing sound creates a meta-spatial layer that dances with the moving images, monologues, and the environment.

Being in a virtual reality environment forces viewers to concentrate on their own senses. In traditional performances, audiences are free to shift in and out of attention without many consequences. However, in a VR setting, one has to pay close attention to the visual, audio clues as well as their own bodily sensations in order to stay balanced. This kind of high-alert state is exploited for its artistic possibilities.
